BUILDING TEAMWORK SKILLS
WITH THE PTPS
I use the PTPS in both team leadership and team membership workshops. When working with team leaders, participants learn their own style and the importance of helping a diverse team achieve collaboration and alignment. Team leaders grasp how to see the strengths of team members, how to observe for excesses, and how to work with individuals to best utilize their strengths. Team leaders also explore the dynamics of bringing their own style into the team dynamic.
In team member sessions, participants focus on raising personal awareness of their own and others’ styles. This facilitates greater working relationships and collaboration. Participants also become more aware of the dynamics that diversity of style brings to a team. We look at the ways to best communicate and include the various styles in day-to-day team activities.
In the workshop, participants complete their own survey and learn about their own style. This often leads to people saying, “That’s right on the money,” as they agree with the validity of the survey results. We also look at the style trends of the people in the room, discussing the group most preferred and least preferred styles. Discussion frequently centers around the organizational culture and the challenges that may face teams when they have an imbalance of styles.
Participants come away with insights about the “human side” of teamwork where it is so important for team members to respect and value the personal styles of all members. They build trust in each other with greater awareness and develop insights about ways to work better together. Finally, participants identify behaviors that they can use with colleagues to help their teams succeed on the performance and human sides of teamwork.
