Using the PTPS in Europe
We have been using the Parker Team Player Survey, in both Europe and the U.S., with very positive results. In both settings the participants are able to quickly identify their own style and its impact on team performance. The survey is frequently cited as an important part of the course.
However, Europe does present problems, since there are words and phrases in the survey that are uniquely American. In order for the Survey to be effective, these phrases must be reviewed and translations provided. And don't worry about affecting the results, because if the translations are not provided, participants will not be able to complete the survey.
Among the words and phrases to watch for are:
- Question #5: "Candid" (this word also shows up in several other questions).
- Question #6: "Too Laid Back" and "Self-Righteous."
- Question #9: "Nit-Picker "(my personal favorite).
- Question #15: "Devil's Advocate".
In addition, always explain the directions slowly and carefully and then give the participants extra time to complete the survey. You should also closely monitor how the people are doing, because despite your best efforts, some will experience difficulty.
