Introductory Notes on the PTPS
As most of you know, the PTPS ( Parker Team Player Survey) was created from the research that formed the basis for my first book, Team Players and Teamwork. In fact, the first version of the Survey appeared in the book. Subsequently, it was revised based on the reliability/validity study and feedback from trainers and participants.
Again, as a user you know that the PTPS yields four scores--one for each of the team player styles:
- Contributor: A task-oriented team member who provides the team with information, does her homework, and pushes the team to set high performance standards and to use resources wisely. Efficient, dependable, responsible, organized, logical and systematic are adjectives that describe a Contributor.
- Collaborator: A goal-directed members who sees the vision and goal of the team as paramount, but is open to new ideas and is willing to pitch in and help in order to help the team reach its goal. The words visionary, imaginative, conceptual, strategic and forward-looking are often associated with a Collaborator.
- Communicator. A process-oriented person who is an effective listener, a facilitator of involvement, conflict resolution, consensus building and the creation of an informal, relaxed environment. Supportive, patient, considerate, tactful, spontaneous and helpful are words that people use to describe a Communicator.
- Challenger. A member who questions the goals, methods and actions of the team and is willing to disagree with the leader and management but who also encourages the team to take well-conceived risks. Outspoken, adventurous, candid, principled and ethical are adjectives usually associated with the Challenger.
