The Underrepresented Challenger
I have used the Team Player Instrument in diverse groups (with many organizations represented) and also intact work teams. Everyone finds the player styles insightful and useful. The participants take the instrument in class and score it. They love the self-assessment aspect of it. Then I have them sub-group by style and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each. Many participants are leaders within their organizations and seem to get a better understanding of how their styles impact the team.
I have been working with this instrument for many years and continue to find that the one style that is always underrepresented is the Challenger. I encourage teams to assign this style to a person for each meeting if the group does not have this style represented.
Not only does it give them the chance to practice the style, it significantly improves the process. The one point that I make that seems to get their attention is: Better for you to challenge your own process, before someone else does!
The instrument is easy to administer and contains great information for future references. It is always rated as one of the most useful aspects of the workshop.
