Tie Team Goals to Organizational Goals
At the best companies, teams select goals that help the business reach its goals.
Here is a chart prepared by a customer service team:
| Company Goals | Team Goals |
|---|---|
| 1. Meet or exceed customer expectations | Personally follow-up on customer needs after every sale. |
| Ask customers what we do well and what could be done better. | |
| 2. Improve in all areas of our business. | Measure customer satisfaction quarterly. |
| 3. Develop dedicated and highly knowledgeable workers. | Provide each team member with a minimum of 20 hours of training annually. |
| 4. Develop long-term customers. | Contact major customers at least once each quarter. |
| 5. Explore new markets and develop new products. | Brainstorm new product ideas based on customer feedback at every monthly staff meeting. |
Discussion Questions:
- Does your team know where the business is headed?
- How well do your team's goals match the company's goals?
- Will both your goals take you in the same direction?
Tip: As an exercise, prepare a similar chart for your team.
