Another book co-authored with Dick Kropp, this was the first volume to provide trainers and facilitators with practical assessment tools and exercises for organizations and teams embarking on the road to self-management.
The book is divided into three sections:
- Getting Started. Here you will find activities designed to help senior management determine if their culture supports empowerment, how to change the culture, how to assess a team's readiness for self-direction, how to get a team off the ground and planning for the transfer of decision-making authority.
- Building and Maintaining the Team. In this, the largest section of the manual, there are exercises to break the ice, build trust, resolve conflict, improve team meetings, develop problem-solving skills, prepare flow charts, assess team effectiveness, develop norms and values, improve inter-group teamwork and build a solid team.
- Special Issues. This section includes team building issues unique to self-directed teams such as leadership, dealing with team stagnation and the changing role of the supervisor.
Activities address a variety of topics:
- Organizational Readiness
- Start-up
- Interpersonal relationships
- Problem-solving
