Cross-Functional Teams Tool Kit
Designed as companion to the book, Cross-Functional Teams: Working With Allies, Enemies and Other Strangers, this handbook is packed with resources for managers, trainers and facilitators who are charged with implementing cross-functional teams in their organization.
I developed the Tool Kit as a response to clients and colleagues who had read the book and were ready to acknowledge that team building with cross-functional teams required some fresh ideas. The resources in this book were designed and field tested for use with cross-functional teams.
The book includes:
- Icebreakers and openers. Here you will find six quick and enjoyable ways to begin or energize a team building and training sessions. They are designed to help partiicpants get acquainted, help them focus on the content of the session and stimulate thinking and interaction.
- Team building and training exercises. This section includes five exercises that focus on team formation, developing norms, cross-department collaboration, role clarification and developing team talents.
- Assessment tools and survey instruments. In this section there are five instruments dealing with various aspects of cross-functional teamwork such as peer review, member selection and conflict.
- Abstracts of articles and research reports. The purpose of this section is to summarize the results of some important research so that it can be put to use by team leaders, facilitators and managers. In addition to summarizing each article, I identify the implications for cross-functional teams and suggest some practical uses for the ideas. The articles and reports deal with such topics as product development, success factors, trust and speeding up the work of cross-functional teams.
- Case Studies. There are six cases in this section--three mini cases that briefly describe an incident or situation and three maxi cases that tell the whole story including the cast of characters. The mini cases deal with support, motivation and empowerment. The maxi cases have been drawn from actual experiences in specific companies but they can be used with teams in other industries because they deal with issue that transcend a variety of industries.
- Reviews of videos for cross-functional team development. This section includes detailed summaries of four videos and ideas on how to use them in training and team building with cross-functional teams.
