Parker Team Player Survey

Over 1 Million Copies Sold!

[cover art]

The Parker Team Player Survey (PTPS) resulted from the research conducted for my book, Team Players and Teamwork, where the four team player styles were first described in detail. In fact, the first draft of the PTPS appeared in the Resources section of the book. Subsequently, the Survey was tested with a number of my clients who suggested revisions. In addition, an independent reliability and validity study provided additional feedback (Kirnan & Woodruff, 1994). The PTPS yields scores for four team player styles:

  1. Contributor: A member who gets the team to focus on the immediate task.
  2. Collaborator: The team player who emphasizes the overall purpose of the team.
  3. Communicator: Interpersonal relationships and group process are this person's strengths.
  4. Challenger: This style asks the tough questions and pushes the team to take reasonable risks.

The PTPS is an 18-item, easy-to-use self-assessment instrument that helps individuals identify their primary team player style. The results and the related exercises give people insight into how to make best use of their strengths and develop a plan for addressing their weaknesses. A new, more user friendly format and modern cover design for the publication increases it usefulness.

The Survey booklet includes complete scoring information, interpretation of the results, action planning guide and team scoring grid. Organizations use the PTPS as part of a new team orientation, an icebreaker for a team class, an exercise in a team training program and as a development tool in a team building intervention with an intact team.

A companion instrument, Parker Team Player Survey: Styles of Another Person (SOAP), allows each person to check his or her perceptions with other team members, peers, supervisors or subordinates. For example, in a team building intervention, I ask each member to complete their own PTPS and the SOAP for each of their teammates. During the team building session they receive a report that presents their PTPS scores and the scores of their teammates. SOAP also received a recent format and cover design face lift that has increased its usefulness to users.

Since its initial publication by Xicom in 1991, the PTPS has become the most popular team member assessment instrument with sales of more than 1 million copies. For more information and tips on how to use it, go to PTPS Users Group
