Team Building

Purpose:

To increase the ability of a group to work together as a team by analyzing its strengths and improvement opportunities, building on the current strengths, reducing the ineffective practices and preparing a plan for on-going team effectiveness. The team, guided by the facilitator, takes responsibility for the development of the plan and its implementation.

Process:

  1. Data Collection: Individual interviews are conducted with each member of the team to obtain their views of the team including ways the team can improve. All interviews are confidential and, in the feedback session, no opinions are associated with any team member. All team members complete a survey instrument that measures team effectiveness The data collection may also include observation of a team meeting, feedback from customers and review of appropriate documents.
  2. Data Analysis: The data is summarized, assessed and linked to a model of team effectiveness. A feedback report is prepared for presentation to the total team.
  3. Data Feedback: The data is presented and discussed at a team meeting. An open discussion clarifies the data.
  4. Problem-Solving and Planning: At the same meeting the data is used as a springboard for a discussion and a series of exercises and activities. The outcome is a plan or, perhaps, several plans for individual and team development. The types of exercises and activities are determined by the issues raised during the data collection phase of the process. As appropriate, the team problem-solving and planning meeting is held off-site in order to minimize distractions.
  5. Follow-up: The team's plan includes a series of follow-up actions and activities.
  6. Evaluation: At some time in the future (e.g., six months), the data collected in step one is re-visited to assess the impact of the plan and the team's progress.
