Team Consulting

Overview:

The nature of the consulting activities varies with the needs of the organization. The process, however, remains constant. It usually begins with an identification by the client that something is wrong, broken or is not achieving its intended goals. In other cases, the organization has developed a strategic plan and is looking for consulting assistance in the implementation of the plan. At that point, the consulting services will involve some level of data collection, diagnosis and, in collaboration with the client, the preparation of a plan. The plan will also include a methodology for evaluation of the intervention.

Typical Activities:

  1. Readiness for Teams: A data collection and assessment intervention that helps the organization determine its ability to mount and sustain a team-based change effort. The activity usually includes an analysis culminating in a plan to address the obstacles and ensure a smooth and successful change process.
  2. Assessment of Existing Teams: Using interviews with team members, custom surveys, observation of team activities and focus groups, an evaluation of on-going teams is conducted. The assessment data is compared with the organization's goals for the team process and standard benchmarks for team effectiveness.
  3. Creating a Team Environment: A set of recommendations focusing on the systems and process supports that are necessary for the successful implementation of teams in the organization. The activity looks at existing supports that need to be enhanced as well a new areas that must be developed.
  4. Consulting With Senior Management: A series of activities designed to orient the top team to the requirements and pitfalls of the change process, their role in supporting the new team environment as well as developing their group into a model of effective teamwork.
  5. Consulting With Human Resources: Working with quality, human resources and training and development staff to develop systems, procedures and programs to support teams and team players. Systems support may include training programs, facilitation, performance management, rewards, information management and other similar areas.
